Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014: VOZ Collaborative Artisan Fashions

reporter: Miguel Dominguez

Voz—“voice” in Spanish—brought its Chilean, artisan designed collection to New York Fashion Week with its show on September 12th.

Voz’s philosophy is the concept of collaborative design. An international team of designers works with Voz’s artisan partners to translate their ancient knowledge of fibers, dyes, and motifs into contemporary items. A group of weavers and seamstresses bring the final designs to life with quality and ethically harvested materials (llama and alpaca wool, silk, cotton, and natural dyes.)

The Mapuche weavers are generally of the last generation who remember how to weave or what their symbols mean in their community. Design innovation helps weavers continue practicing, rescuing, and cultivating their native art forms.
