November 19 was the night of the Opening Gala at Holiday House NYC.

Everybody's mood and behavior was like that of one big family reunion on New Years Day. Great, great fun was had by all, especially me. It was one of those events where photographing the revelers really added to the merriment, not just for me, but for all of my subjects as well.

MANSION IN MAY: BLAIRSDEN Show House

reporter and photos: Miguel Dominguez
copy: Mansion in May

Just having opened on May 1st and ending on the 31st, Blairsden is the sort of venue that interior designers are always dreaming they could do from top to bottom. A lot of them would consider such privilege the highest point of their careers. Located in at the end of the New Jersey Gladstone train line and within one hour from Penn Station in New York (For information on how to get to Blairsden, please click here), it's one of the best Spring outings one can have this month, for not only seeing the beautifully designed rooms is as much a cultural experience as going to the Metropolitan Museum, but the house has an extensive terraced garden and is surrounded by acres of hilly parkland, turning the visit into a very relaxing day in the country.

As with all Show Houses, always planned to benefit charitable projects and/or organizations, this particular project of the Women's Association of Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC) benefits the expansion of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a new Pediatric Autism and Child Development Center of the Goryeb Children's Hospital at Morristown Medical Center.

HOLIDAY HOUSE Kick Off Party

reporter: Miguel Dominguez

On October 22nd, the Holiday House NYC benefit for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation had its kick off party at the Academy Mansion, where the show house takes place every year. It's a nice gathering for the people and companies from all the architecture and interior decor related industries involved, before they start the hard, exhausting work of putting each of the rooms together.

Holiday House will run from November 21st to December 18th, with their Gala Opening on November 20th, which I already covered and will be posting in the near future with a link to this article as well.

JOHN LYLE New Designs in Luxury Furniture

reporter: Miguel Dominguez

John Lyle shows off his wall sculptures and a
treasure of a side table with a quartz top

John Lyle is a sculptor/designer who specializes in luxurious appointments for the home. Most of his pieces, including furniture, are hand made of metal (he's very partial to bronze), but he also likes to play with more organic materials such as shagreen and linen on some of his pieces.

So, on July 24, Holly Hunt, the showroom where some of his work is on display, had a rather intimate (read exclusive) presentation, unveiling his newest designs for his friends on the trade.

DAZZLING DESIGN by Amanda Nisbet - Book Signing

reporter: Miguel Dominguez

Sponsored by ELLE DECOR Magazine, The Duravit showroom was the venue on November 15th, when New Yorker Amanda Nisbet celebrated the publication and had the book signing of Dazzling Design.

In it, she brings a fresh approach to traditional luxury in interior decor. Color, texture, and form blend to create her trademark of comfortable elegance, combining function and style, classicism and modernism, in beautifully unexpected ways. With over 250 spectacular photographs of New York City apartments, country houses, and Hamptons beach homes, Dazzling Design shows readers how to bring punch and color to classic rooms. Nisbet’s broad knowledge, with its roots in her art historical studies in Italy and years at Christie’s auction house, is evident on every page. This gorgeously illustrated volume is a must read for those who enjoy luxurious decoration that’s eclectic, elegant, and warmly welcoming.

reporter: Miguel Dominguez

Jay Gurewitsch

On February 4th, Voices of Gotham, the New York men's chorus group, was the beneficiary of Arcadia Spa & Home’s First Mondays Fundraiser.

Happening the first Monday of each month, First Mondays are free afterwork socials that benefit grassroots, local and NYC based charities. Over the evening, 10% of the evening’s sales and 100% of raffle proceeds are donated to the featured cause—part of Arcadia’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Housing Works, Broadway Cares, Angel on a Leash, Trinity Place Shelter, GMHC and the PTAs for both Lab School and PS11 have benefited from First Mondays and shared almost $3,000 raised since May.

“Our First Mondays events benefit local charities that have real and positive impacts on our community,” says owner Jay Gurewitsch. “We want to foster those relationships and encourage connections between our customers and these causes.”
